At World Class Moving, we’re obsessed with relocations—and recognize the enormous impact that moving has on families with children of all ages. Moving can be an incredibly exciting time for parents with kids, and the potential to create unforgettable memories they’ll remember forever is practically a given.
However, moving with children can also be downright challenging. This is especially true for the unprepared. Planning a move with kids usually becomes more complicated than you’d think, with packing distractions, emotional ups and downs, and a multitude of other problems that come up during preparation.
As one of the leading moving companies on the East Coast, World Class Moving has been serving families with kids since 1977. We know a thing or two about making moving projects easy—and are here to help you get organized with these helpful tips for moving with the kids.
Preparing for the Big Day
Make no mistake—the challenges of moving exist across all types of moving projects, from the simplest, one-person move, to the most complex ones. With kids, moving isn’t easy, but there are things you can do to make the process easier on you and on them. Here are our best tips for simplifying your moving process (and for making it as stress-free as possible).
- Acknowledge their Feelings: The number one tip for moving with children is to let the kids feel what they’re feeling, and give them permission to feel upset. Most likely, this move is the first large event to occur in their life, especially if they’re on the younger side.
They may be excited one moment about the move, and feel angry or sad about it in the next. Pay attention to your children’s moods and help them manage them properly. Encourage them to text or Skype with their friends.
- Lead by Example: This one can be challenging 100% of the time, but you’ll thank yourself if you can adhere to this mantra. A move will be just as emotionally impactful on you as it will be for your kids. If you’re having a hard moment in front of the kids, try and use the slip-up as a way to teach them how to effectively manage negative feelings. If you’re excited about something, then share those feelings too. Children need to know that you care as much as they do about the upcoming changes and that they affect everyone.
- Master the Schedule: The best moves are organized with a moving planner and checklist, filled with weeks of planning the move on a day-to-day basis. If you’re unsure of how to create a moving timeline, seek the help of a professional moving company to help you plan your weeks preceding the move.
Coordinate with your children what needs to be done concerning the move the day before, so they know what to expect. Make sure to stick to regular bedtimes, meal times, traditions, or anything else that may contribute to a sense of normality. The more things can stay the same, the less impact the differences will make when it’s moving time.
- Hire Professional Moving Services: Let’s face it. Moving is difficult enough. Adding children to the equation, especially on moving day, just adds to the equation. That’s why we recommend partnering with a professional moving company, preferably one that ours that is experienced with moving families and is also kid-friendly. Some companies may offer promotions or have things to do for your kids to keep them distracted during the move. At the very least, make sure it’s a company that prides itself on positive customer experience. The staff will work extra hard to make moving day a great day for you and your children.
